Another coolant leak thread.. sorry

Hey I have a 2004 330i and its been giving me problems lately.

First I was driving along the freeway when all of a sudden my power steering failed and it became very hard to steer (very stiff) I parked and a lot of steam was coming out from the radiator. I looked around more and it turns out one of the belts ripped. I took it to a mechanic and they replaced the belt and the pulley.

now a week later, I was sitting in my car with the AC blasting, when all of a sudden it stopped blowing cold air. I turned the car off and took a look under the hood and the same thing was happening, a large amount of steam was coming out from the radiator.

I let it cool down for a couple hours and then drove the car for about 5 minutes to get home. In this time, the thermostat kept creeping up until it flashed red. I stopped my car and left alone for a few hours.

When it cooled down, I took a look at the coolant level and it was bone dry, so I topped it off and left it over night. The next morning, I took a look at the level again and it was completely dry again!

Im not sure where the leak is coming from but it is leaking pretty fast (full to empty in about 12 hours). I cant get the car to my mechanic until Saturday because of work. I am really not very handy, but im willing to learn how to figure out wehere the leak is coming from and possibly doing the repair myself if its in my skill level.

my question are;
have I done any damage to the engine for driving it for those 5 minutes when the thermostat started to read hot?

Can I drive the car for 5 minute intervals (to and from work) if I put some coolant in before I start each time?
