convertible top hatch mortor doesn't disengage

Have a problem with my 1994 325i convertible in that the motor to the :help Toneau cover does not disengage when the emergency release lever is pulled. Drive motor to top disengages ok but can only disengage the ton eau motor by reaching behind the mounting bracket with a small screwdriver and prying the motor away from gear engagement. After properly following the directions to initialize the top- including removing #7 fuse that controls trunk lid - ton eau cove microswitch, and re-engaging the drive motors and following the correct procedure (top opening switch held in opening position then inserting ignition key and turning to 2nd nothing happens)
Can hear slight brief clicking noise from trunk area but toneau doesn't open. This problem began as i was lowering the top and lowering motion quit midway in cycle.
I Thought the top needed reinitializing and started the procedure I had used in past. Has anyone had same problem or know what to suggest?:help:help
