I've been reading FDM and Spal fan threads for a year and haven't found my answer, so I'm throwing it out there.
I had some issues with my aux fan (after replacing it) last year, and I learned a lot about the cooling system (and got to buy a new expansion tank as a result). My aux fan is my only real fan - my belt fan is free wheeling and needs to be replaced.
There is a mistaken impression that fans/shrouds/etc don't provide any benefit at speed.
I have an OBD II Bluetooth dongle, and I use Torque to monitor my vitals.
Monitoring my temps while running, I saw clearly that the fan plays a major role, even in clear air at 80+mph (was in Austin when this first happened). In dirty air it has an even more profound effect.
In 95+ degree weather, the car runs cooler (at speed) with the A/C on (and therefore the aux fan forced on). If the fan cuts out at speed (in my case because the female parts on the new aux fan connector were just slightly too big for the male prongs that plug into it) with the A/C on it overheats. A/C off and it runs warm, but doesn't overheat.
All just a long way of saying that even at very high speed in clean air your aux fan makes a big difference in maintaining positive pressure against the radiator and keeping temps lower, and the shroud is also key to maintaining that pressure.
Having seen the benefit, I want to mount a Spal fan to my factory shroud rather than pinning it against the radiator. That's why Zionsville built their aluminum shroud - I just don't want to pay so much for something I already have.
And have I mentioned I'm in Texas? June track days are mighty hot around here - and crawling on the freeways in August is even hotter. AN oil cooler could help with the track application, but would be less help in traffic.
Thoughts?
My background:
I don't have time to post much, but I'm not a noob. I've had my car for about 6.5 years, and have done my own head gasket, replaced my radiator w/Mishimoto, replaced my rear sub frame/bushings/suspension, A/C pump, aux fan, (w/factory), M50 intake manifold, wheel bearings, etc. Various failed sensors and other components, and this place has been a lifesaver more times than I can count.

Spal fan mount to OEM shroud (not rad) - Any experience?
