New owner of an old (250k miles) 1991 525i with an auto transmission (don't know which one yet :-/) .
Sometimes when I put the car in park, it doesn't seem like the parking pawl engages. The car will roll freely as if it were in neutral. Sometimes If i shift out/in to park multiple times I can get park to engage. The problem does not seem to be affected by if the vehicle is warmed up or not.
When driving the car, sometimes it will hesitate to shift from 3rd to 4th gear unless you "nudge" the selector level from "D" forward (without actually bumping it up a notch). From then on it shifts up/down correctly.
I had my wife shift through the gears while I watched under the transmission. I didn't see anything... weird. She was not able to shift from 2nd to 1st. It was like she's already run out of travel.
I performed the Selector Lever Service outlined in the bentley manual (250-3) and this did not seem to make a difference (besides I can not make it into the "1" position). I also removed and cleaned the Gear Position/Neutral safety switch.
At this point I suspect the Gear Position/Neutral safety switch, but I don't know exactly what the vehicle uses it for. It looks like it electrically detects all of the positions - but what does the vehicle use this info for? I assume the transmission is actually shifted by the mechanical motion of the selector switch.
Any hints or comments? A good explanation of what the gear position/neutral safety switch does would probably tell me if I should replace it or perform more tests.
Thanks!
