Hi.
I noticed this when I picked up my E39 a couple of months back and drove it 10 hours straight back home.
I haven't had any real freeway driving since then till now and noticed it again.
Driving normally or enthusiastically around suburbia and link roads the temperature sits exactly half gauge and doesn't move. Couldn't ask for better.
When on the freeway and cruising at > 100klms per hour the gauge drops to below the first mark at about a quarter and even to the edge of the blue band. If I get to a town or a low speed zone, it quickly comes back up to the halfway mark.
So I concluded the themostat must be stuck in the open position (although the engine warms up reasonably quickly in the morning from cold).
So I'm told my M54 has the electric thermostat. My concern is that I don't have any engine fault codes to indicate a problem with the thermostat but shouldn't there be something? eg: operating out of range, short circuit, open circuit or something?
I'm not even sure I have the electric thermostat and wonder if thats an assumption by my spare parts chap. I haven't looked closely but last time I did look the engine over I couldn't see any loom or cable going to it like I see if I google an image for it.
Whether its electric or not, should I be looking to replace it with an aftermarket metal housing or stick to the OEM plastic housing? (is there a metal housing electric unit available? I've seen the normal fixed one, but not an electric one).
