x5 Won't start

Good evening. I've read quite a few threads on here and some of it has been quite helpful. I'm looking for some clarification because I've read some conflicting information about ews which could be as a result of my limited knowledge around different models and different ews versions.

My situation: 2004 x5 4.4i 160,000km Never had an issue starting. Always fires up first turn of the key. This weekend after she sat in the sun all day I went to turn the key. It cranks but won't fire. I believe I can hear the fuel pump engage when I turn the key. Battery is two months old but decided to boost anyway. Still no dice with the boost.

Took it to the mechanic and he was able to get it going by recoding the ews to the key. However, it only works the one time. The next time you try to turn the key it won't fire. He says he believes the ews unit needs to be replaced. (2 week back order from Germany) Unfortunately I don't have a second key so I can't see if the one key I do have is causing the issue. Is that even likely? I could get a new key fairly quickly but not sure if that'll help.

Where I was hoping for some clarification is that in most cases I read that if the EWS is causing the problem the x5 shouldn't crank at all. My x5 cranks just fine but won't fire. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Kris
