I have just replaced the PCV on my 840CI and now have a problem with the engine picking up when I press the throttle quickly. If it was an old car with a carburetor, you'd say it was the accelerator pump.
What I have just done:-
I've had a lot of it in bits to replace the fuel lines (MOT advisory), replace the radiator and replace the PCV (to hopefully cure a massive oil leak).
Timm's write up on the PCV is pretty much spot on and I'm pretty sure I got everything right. While I was in there I replaced the fuel line all the way back the the carbon canister just under the fuel filler and the other one back to just in front of the rear wheel. I can't think of anything that I could have done rear of the firewall that might cause this.
I replaced the radiator and again I can't think of anything around there that I might have disturbed.
On the PCV, there's one port with nothing attached - on the top right hand side as we look from the FRONT. I don't remember anything connected to that.
I blanked off the large port with a blanking plug and heatshrink sleeving as the original blanking cap was split.
I fitted the pipe to the fuel pressure regulator - it's a bit fiddly so I remember doing it. I connected the large pipe with the clip and I assume the pipe in the centre of the PCV is connected ok.
While in there connecting the fuel lines, I moved the harnesses which go into the box on the left hand side (looking from the FRONT) up near the windscreen. I also disconnected the large multi way plugs to ease the looms out of the way for better access. I'm confident I put everything back.
It started up no problem and the little bit of smoke from the exhaust has now gone so I think most of it is ok! It's just this hesitation when I press the throttle quickly. I haven't got it off the ramps yet, this is what's happening with it running in neutral on the ramps. I think the hesitation and resulting movement of the engine has torn the oil filter rubber mounts.
Something I did when I got the car a few years ago was to block off a pipe at the front of the engine. It was hissing and I couldn't find anything it might connect to! I can't find it in the manuals or on any parts diagrams. It's a short stubby pipe pointing forward out from a 'T' piece (I think) and it's located just above the left hand pipe (looking from the FRONT) going into the water pump, at the water pump. Anybody know what this is and where it goes?
I blanked this off a long time ago and I have never had this problem before so I don't think it is anything to do with the hesitation.
Another MOT advisory was the small link pipe on one of the front calipers. It links the two halves together on the bottom of the caliper. It's listed on realoem as part number 34111162179 but is no longer available. Does anyone out there have one of these new or off an otherwise scrap caliper?
