My E36 which my Daughter has driven daily and to college for the last couple years may have finally met its end. While she had it at school a kid driving his dad's lifted jeep back into it, apparently going fairly fast. She was in the car, but key was out of the ignition, so zero fault on her part. He hit the the trunk of my 36 with his spare tire hanging from the back. Maybe scuffed his tire, but crushed the trunk lid and tore the OEM M spoiler off. There was some damage to the bumper, but more like it knocked it off a pin or something. Not cracked, just scratched.
Anyway, I drove it to a local collision center to get an estimate and it came out to $3100. I actually laughed when I heard the number. Chances are it is a total, with the Odometer showing 280,000 miles (It is a replacement cluster, but that is what it shows). The amount is split between parts - Trunk @~ $700 and spoiler @~ $350, then paint and the balance labor.
She has already found an E39 5-speed she wants to move up to.
