Heater Core Removal?

I'm sorry up front on this. I searched and did not find an active thread on this. I found one but the link was broken.

I I have my dash completely out and the bolts removed on the plate for the tubes going into the core. I have the core exposed. I can't seem to get the tubes to move out of the box at all, tho I'm not sure they are supposed to move. What do you do to get the core out from this point?

thanks, Scott

98 540i with nav that doesn't work and other problems

I recently picked up a 98 540i with navigation non dsp and the nav screen doesn't work. It just looks like an old tv without any input connected to it while it's on. The radio and CD player do however work, kinda. The head unit doesn't shut off but it will stop pushing any sound from the speakers after roughly 3 minutes of sound. But if I turn it off and turn it right back on it starts making sounds again.

So I was going to swap in the old jvc unit I have in my e34 to see if it's the head unit or the amp and it's a no go because the adapters are all sorts of different.

I don't want to retain the headunit or the nav so where can I find an adapter to wire up a new headunit and does anyone have any idea if it's my amp that is bad or just my head unit? thanks for your help.

325is getrag to zf swap

I plan to swap the transmission on my 1995 325is from getrag to zf as mines shot and I hear the zf can take more abuse. I found a complete 1997 328 sedan parts car for it. I would rather buy a complete car to pull it from rather than looking for several different parts. I read somewhere a while back that something on the zfs changed at some point, I think it was the drive shaft, but can't remember. Is there an ideal year zf to use, or are they all the same to swap in? And is there anything aside from the obvious grinds/rough shifts to look out for that could be the early stages of a bigger problem?

E65,E66 Car goes into neutral while driving

Recently had some maintenance done o2008 750li, what they said was faulty hoses. They had my car for 10 days. So I thought the worst was behind me. The first day I got it back,it went into neutral while I was slowing down. Also power steering went out. I was able to turn off then turn back on.now when I start car ,it kinda idles high for a quick second and then goes back to normal. On take off it seems to have a quick jerk.I ran it through code reader and P2187 and P2189 pop up. Are these related? Any suggestions? I'm not much of a car guy so any advice will help.

Removing dash top and guage problem

Hello, trying to remove the top part only of the dash to examine why the drivers side vents get no air. I've came across what appears to be a one-time rivet holding the top on - is this original? Is it really one-time?

I suspect this was added by a previous owner and I'll have to cut it off or cut the plastic around it, but thoughts welcome.

Whilst I have the cluster out I thought I'd address another long-standing problem - sometimes the fuel or temp gauges will show zero - then you can hit a bump in the road and they return to the proper value. I was thinking a loose connection or bad solder joint, but having peeked inside the cluster I see the dials are connected to the pcb via some long leads - so I'm unsure if the problem is now dial side, or pcb side. Anyone ever have this problem?

Thanks,

I pulled these tail lights off of a wrecked 1997 E36 M3 that I purchased as a donor vehicle. I thought these lights would fit my ti compact, but will not. The M3 has frontal damage only and these tail lights look to be in great condition. I was not able to check functionality.

Fuel Leaks when I fill up the tank

Hello everyone,

First off I want to say thank you to everyone who contributes in the betterment and guidance to these chariots.

I have a 1990 325i convertible. I recently replaced my fuel pump and when I filled up the tank to full I noticed a great amount of fuel leaking underneath the car. I rushed home, luckily I was not too far, and made it safe. Once I got home I disconnected the battery, removed the back seats and decided to look at the housing for where the sending unit is located. I unscrewed the top and the foam was soaked in fuel. I lifted the sending unit and of course some gas was coming out so I quickly put the piece back in. The moment I did, fuel was coming out underneath.

My question is, could there be a crack in the housing? Or is there are another problem. My apologies for my lack of understanding still learning.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

2007 335i

2007 335i

For sale: 2007 335i sedan (N54 engine), Alpine White on Terra Dakota leather, burr walnut wood trim, 6spd auto with shift paddles. Premium and Sport packages (M sport suspension, sport seats) Active Steering, Dynamic Cruise control, Xenon/adaptive headlights, Logic7 sound system, power front seats and ambient lighting package. 18" staggered style 162 wheels. Bone stock mechanically, 119k miles on the chassis.

Unfortunately, the engine in the car has seized/locked up. I tried to manually advance the engine and it was very difficult, so I believe there is a spun rod bearing, a bent connecting rod or something similar going on in the bottom end. BMW dealer confirmed the need for internal engine repair, but is not willing to tear the engine down and rebuild it. I've found used engines for 2.5-3.5k complete with turbos and warranties, however, I think it is time for me to move on from this car.

Body and paint are in great shape, no dings or dents to speak of in any panels. At the time of engine failure, all electronics were functioning properly. Interior is nearly mint with only some extremely minor wear on the outer bolster edge of the driver's seat back.

A PO had the windows tinted, carbon wrapped the trim, and replaced the door handle LED's with BMW roundel ones. The wrap job is low quality at best and I was debating about re-wrapping or ditching it altogether before the engine seizure.

Minor issues worth mentioning: Will need a new right rear tire (255/35), the tumbler/handle for the glovebox door needs to be replaced, some slight curb damage to the underside of the front bumper and some small areas of spidering paint on the lower fascia. Comes with 1 key.

I'm asking $6500 firm. Clean and clear title is in hand. No accidents. Great chassis for someone with a motor ready to swap in or someone looking to do a build. I fully believe that the motor in the car can be rebuilt by someone with the tools, time and skills. The car must be picked up with a trailer or towed away. I'm willing to consider trades for other BMW's, certain American muscle (no, your v6 or 4.6l mustang is not a muscle car), boats and motorcycles. I will part the car out if need be, but would like to sell it whole and give someone else an opportunity to fix it up and enjoy it. Cash only, no pay pal or checks.

NJ: E39 1999 BMW 540i 6 Speed Sport Silver/Black 110k $8300

Hello folks, up for sale is my 1999 BMW 540i. The car is silver with black interior, it has the sport package which includes the sport seats, steering wheel, shadow trim, and lower suspension. As far as options go, this car came with Xenon lights, fold down rear seats, and the premium DSP sound system. The interior on this car is in very good shape, i would rate it as 8.5 out of 10, no rips in any of the leather seats, the rear seats are barely used and even the driver seat has very little signs of wear. The exterior has it's flaws as this is a 15 year old car and I mainly do highway driving. Overall I would give the exterior a 7 out of 10. Don't get me wrong, the car looks very clean and I get compliments on it all the time, but if you wanted to pick nits, there are some things that keep this car from being great. The front bumper has some chips from highway driving and there are some dents in the rear quarter panel.

Maintenance:
I've got a binder full of records for the items adddressed while I've had the car which include:
Rear Ball Joints
Valve Cover Gaskets
Transmission Fluid
Water Pump
Thermostat
Lower Radiator Hose
Expansion Tank
Suspension components
I'm sure I'm forgetting things but if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Now the 1 question I always get is regarding the Timing Chain Guides. And the answer is NO, they have not been replaced. The were inspected when the valve cover gaskets were done and I was told they were in good shape. Furthermore, this car is absolutely silent upon start up. There is non of that rattle that you get when the guides start to go bad.

Mods:
Umnitza M-sport bumpers front/back
OEM M5 power folding mirrors
OEM Facelift lights with FX-R Projectors and Depo Lens replacement
OEM E38 Staggered M-Parallel wheels (included spare)
Suspension - The car is on H&R sport springs and Bilstein Sport shocks/struts. The ride is a little bit rougher than the stock sport suspension, but the handling benefits are amazing! This car handles like it's on rails and all of the suspension components have been replaced with Lemforder parts.

I thinks that's everything, you can email me at LGeronimo550@mail.com

91 318is break pad wear sensor.."two" wires to caliper???

New front pads and rotor....looking at the sensor wire setup...one sensor wire(covered by rubber covering) goes from the connector under the hood to the "back" of the Girling caliper....the other wire runs parallel with that wire but is cut and taped off?...what is this second wire for?
I have new sensors on order. Were there different sensor setups for the 318is...some photos show the sensor wire going to the slot in the brake pad itself? Anyone have a phot of how these two wires connect?

So I've been communicating with ESS they are telling me I will see a gain of 120...in my calculations if that number is correct I would see 492 hp at crank and 555 torque at the crank ,,, any SC cars here see those types of numbers?

I'm getting ready to order a new power steering pump for my 540i. Want to make sure I have everything before I start the project.

Buzzing sound from speakers

Hi

I'm experiencing this buzzing sound when revving through my speakers.

Anyone know what this is? How to resolve it?

I've got a aftermarket head unit in my E34 with a amplifier. Amp is connected straight onto the battery but the head unit takes power from a (+) supply up front but i didn't supply it its own earth. It takes earth from the radio aerial wire.

1987 E30 325 E Coupe, 5spd

1987 E30 325 E Coupe, 5spd

1987 BMW 325e E30 Driver/Project car, 5spd.
This is a car that needs work but is solid and runs well- does not burn blue! I used it as a daily driver (80 miles per day) for almost a year. AC and power steering belts are off, never had them on, so don't know if AC works. NO RUST in this car, except one very small dime size spot on lower rear wheel well on passenger side! Car is from Texas originally. Body is straightest I have seen in Maryland- no dents, no bondo.

Has: new driveshaft, new front suspension, fuel runners, newer H&R lowering springs and shocks, fairly new tires all around, rims are nice 15"- no curb rash. Good stereo w/ IPhone jack, good speakers.

Needs:
Paint-current paint is peeling clear coat, but once sanded and prepped a bit, would be an easy repaint.
Engine runs good but could use a tune up and new intake boot (I might buy one and put it on before sale), transmission is good, would be better with a short throw shifter, clutch is good. Timing belt was changed recently. Recent oil change. 4 disc brakes, posi rear end. Sun roof is also missing the crank mechanism and gear so it opens by hand only- meaning you push is with your hand. I was thinking of welding it shut and making a hard top, but never did. Dash is cracked, tach stopped working, interior is decent but headliner could use work.

Would prefer it if a person who knows BMWs and appreciates E30s buy the car. This is a great foundation for a great car. I have had WAY too many tire kickers and douche bags on CL asking about the car and looking at the car thinking that it should be a perfect, done E30 for $2500.... morons.

I am open to partial trade for the following WITH at least $1500 cash:
-Jeep YJ hard top and doors
-Cheaper Nissan, Honda automatic for a friend that needs a first car
-Certain hunting rifles
-Parts for a 1970 Chevelle
-20" rims that would fit a 2007 Mustang

Can deliver it for small fee if you purchase as well....
Thanks,
Nik

Active autowerks gen 3 exhaust with "raceland" header

I have a used exhaust setup that came off my 98 m3 for sale. I believe its the raceland longtube headers up front going straight back to the active autowerks gen 3 catback muffler. Twin pipes going from headers all the way back 2.25" if im not mistaken. Overall both header and exhaust system is pretty well there are no holes in it, and one of my personal favorite sounds on the e36. There is one small hole in the piping that was added on after the resonators were removed but should be an easy fix. Fyi the exhaust and headers will be split both for the mine and the buyers convinience.

headers 80$ picked up
AA exhaust 400$ picked up
or 450$ for both

Replacing the cruise control cable 1994 e34 540i

I replaced the throttle cable and am now going to replace the cruise control cable.
So the question is: how to you get to where it connects?
It seems to disappear some place under the brake booster.
Do I have to take out the driver's side headlights to get at it?
I really hope I don't have to remove the master brake cylinder and brake booster.

Thanks in advance.

E39 540i ecu not being detected

I just purchased a 2002 540i6 msport. Everything is clean and nice but there is a misfire. Normally just like all the other cars I have owned I would connect my snappy computer and read the codes. When I tried this though the computer wouldn't/couldn't read my ecu. It would do everything else such as clearing airbag codes or reading the transmission. I am not sure if this may be something easy and simple to fix or if I need to get someone to look at it. The previous owner had subwoofers wired in the back where he tapped wires and all kinds of jigaboo nonsense which I am wondering if it could be related. Any input is greatly appreciated, I am really looking forward to driving this beast! Thanks.

Wiring Harness Creation

Been looking into my no start issue and I believe it's time to start checking the wiring harness. So I did some research and found a pretty cool page on building wiring harnesses. It discusses fatigue, corrosion resistance, sealing and strain relief among others. They've even provided a doc on Hand Cable Laying.

Has anyone else done any hand building of their wiring harness? Not that I'm dead set on re-creating my wire harness, but I'd actually enjoy it if I had to.

automatic transmission reliability in an 03 Z4 3.0L

I've found a locally for sale 2003 Z4 with 140000 miles which finally puts it in my budget range. The body and interior are mint but ideally I was looking for a manual. The main concern I have is the reliability of the automatic. My main experience is late 90 early 2000 VW's where the manual tranny's ran forever and the automatics constantly gave out and were EXPENSIVE to replace.

Before I make this guy an offer, can anybody tell me if the automatic transmissions are as reliable as the manual transmissions? I realize that any car with 140,000 miles is risky, but I can do most of the repairs.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Overall, I built this for a fun track car, but my focus has changed more to my career, and a move is in my immediate future. This car also comes with the original door cards and rear inserts, the entire back seating is there and in very decent shape for the age. Alot of extras come with it too, even a extra set of 14's that are mainly for rollers. Exhaust system is also all brand new. With the way the E30 market is, the demand for great shape ones are skyrocketing. I think my price is fair

LS/T56 Rear end gearing questions

Those of you that are running E36's, where are you finding the limit of 95 M3 axles and diff? At stock LS6 power I had broken the diff bolt. I'm looking to go down in gearing from a 3.91 to a 3.64, 3.46, or even 3.23 and possibly doing the e34 m5 rear end upgrade. Do you guys think its necessary? The fastest I ran on the stock (LS6) motor was a 12.7 at 109.9 with traction problems and gearing felt a little short for autox.
My transmission gearing is 2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 .84 .57

With a 3.91 max speeds per gear are 41 59 85 122 145 214
With a 3.46 max speeds per gear are 46 66 96 138 164 242
With a 3.23 max speeds per gear are 49 71 103 148 176 259

I'm running 285/30/18 Star Spec 2's in the rear and 265/30 in the front. Car sees drag maybe monthly but I also autox it and will track it. The new setup is CNC ported 243 heads and a 228/232 Cam with a wet 125-150 shot of nitrous which should make about 440/400 wheel N/A and 580-600/600 on the bottle. Thanks!

Warm Start Issue

Hello again guys, I am finally back in the states and boy did I miss the 21. So a few of you may recall me moaning about how I had an issue with starting the car after warned up. However back then it started fine every morning and after work. I could also restart it in 30 mins or so without issue. However now that I am back and it is about 900°C outside I have had issues starting it almost every single time. The only time I have not was early this morning It fired on first try idled poorly for a few seconds and off I went.. Until I got to the first stop sign and then I died as it came back down to idle but it fired right away and was then fine. Let me back up the the first time I tried starting yesterday. It had sat for a month so I was not shocked when it didn't want to start right away. However my stomach sank the first time it fired and sputtered out after a second or two just like it used to on a warm start. I finally got it running and took off on my two hour journey home, and it ran like a champ as it always has. At work today I went out to start it at lunch and had the same problem cranking with no fire.. Let it sit.. Crank with a little stutter.. Let it sit.. Curse for 5 mins.. Finally fires up idles really low for a few seconds then stalls, fires right back up but idles poorly(very low rpm and shudders.) if I try to give it gas it boggs more and tried to die. If i let it go for 30 or so seconds then I can give it gas and be off. I had the exact same problem after work was over.

I have done a bunch of searching and used some previous advise from you guys. It seems like it must be the WUR or cold start system. Sounds like vac leaks result in high idle which is a non issue as it idles at 900 rpm all day after it warms up.

Things I have done(not much since I have been gone):

Checked all vac hoses

PO replaced accumulator, fuel pump, filter, lines, and has tanks cleaned about 2K miles ago.

I checked out the ignition system which seems fine

Purchased new Red label coil, bavauto wires, AR52 plugs, new cap and rotor. But have not installed this stuff yet.

Adjusted my calves

Purchased PN 62111268355 but I believe it is the wrong sensor I want to help with starting issues.

Checked fuses

I am hopeful that the new starting issues will help some of you help me lol.

I am at the point where it seems like I will just have to start replacing stuff until it is fixed and I would rather spend that money on a little fun. A local is selling all kinds of 69-70 2002 parts including headers, manifold and carb, and a 2.0 motor. I will likely buy this stuff as I had planned on a mild na street build with side drafts when the car gets retired as my daily next year. I have heavily been considering going with the stock solex carb in place of all this witch magic. I was looking to go efi and turbo for a while but knew I would just get boost hungry until I had a car that sucked on the street. I have some experience with bike carbs which puts me miles ahead of what I know about K jet.

Recommendations for a PPI near LA

Since I am over 2000 miles away in Michigan, I need some recommendations for a reputable shop or individual to perform a PPI on an e34 M5 near Los Angeles. There is very little history on the car and the carfax isn't telling me much so I'm looking for somebody who is highly knowledgeable of S38s and E34s in general, along with very sharp eye for any history of body work who is willing to check out this car for me. My first choice was to just get a hold of the dealers in that area but if there is an expert on these cars out there who can provide this service for me then I'd like to get in contact. Thanks!

Thank you:)

Hi people

i just wanted to say thanks for all of the help you have given me over the last year or so. I got back into E36 ownership a couple of years ago and have now had my 328 convertible for about 15 months or so - and you lot have very little idea of how all of your posts and knowledge have helped me.

I don't post here very much but I do read everything pretty much everyday and although I'm no mechanic, you've given me the confidence to tackle various electrical issues, the bleeding of the nightmare cooling system, understanding wheels and tires and offsets and the like.

This place is such an awesome resource for these old cars so thanks again for unwittingly helping keep (and make) my old car as great as it can be!

Cheers,
Rich

New guy here.

Hello guys.

Just bought a new Z3 and look forward to spending plenty of time here learning from most of you guys.
Its my first BMW and its a Red 1997 1.9L. I cant post pics, not sure why. The PO was very meticulous and everything is in top shape inside and out. Only three things I wish to do are purely cosmetic.

1. Need to replace the original top and go from tan to black. Based on the cost of labor vs the cost of the part, its looking like a DIY. There is plenty of info on how to do it, but best to hear first hand from folks that have done it (i.e two man job? estimated length? difficulty level? etc). Thoughts and experiences?
2. Need to repaint the from bumper from gravel rash. PO lived in a remote area.
3. Not entirely sold on the stock "star shaped" wheels with the ridge in the middle. I am looking to go with the BBS style 42's ( RIM #59270 - ID Number 36111095058). The problem/question I have is that when I compare the Z3 stock wheel allowables vs the specs of these rims, they appear to fit. However, when I try to go online and simulate a purchase for fitment verification, it says that they will only fit models from 1998 or later. Can someone tell me why? There is a guy on CL selling a set from his 2000 BMW 328i. Im trying to stay with 16's because PO put new tires last may, but would consider going with 17s. Will they fit?

Other than that, its just drive...drive...drive!

Thanks

Also, if someone can shed some light on how to post pics, Ill share a few. Thanks

comfort access not working after car jumpstarted

Hi, I've had to jumpstart my 2007 325d, after that, the comfort access feature stopped working, nothing happens when I hold or tap the door handle to lock or unlock and can't start the car without FOB in the "contact". I can still lock/unlock the car with the FOB buttons so the battery in the FOB is ok (I've tried replacing it too). I've tried the second FOB too, same result.
Any ideas how to solve this?
Cheers, Igor

Oil pump question

I installed my new Achilles built pump and tube. Where the block and pump meets, there's no seal? I removed the old and looked to make sure, it just seats to the block. Aside from the 2 alignment dowels, there's nothing there?
I got the gasket for the pick up tube, I just want to verify is all.. Just thought it was strange on how that's going to seal under pressure

Best place to purchase a new drive shaft?

The universal joints went out in my 1991 735IL, and as all of you have found out, "no replacing them"! Does anyone know of a cheaper place to purchase one? The cheapest I can find is $450, and I'm not really sure that it's the right one. How do you know which one is correct? This is the first major thing that has gone out in my car that I haven't been able to fix by myself with major forum help!!!

Thanks,
Mike

E38 740iL-Turns over but doesn't start.

Hello everyone, I have come to these forums looking for multiple answers when needing to repair my '99 E38 740iL. Have had good luck so far here, so I created an account on here so that I could post a thread when I needed help most and could not find a more definitive answer to my latest issue, so here it goes.

My 1999 E38 is currently turning over but it isn't getting the spark to start the engine up. I have had a few people (a couple of them being mechanics on the side) I know try and help me figure out what is causing it. My most recent attempt to fix the issue is replacing the spark plugs. So I have new plugs in it. My battery is only a couple months old, and I replaced the starter about a month ago when it went out. I brought up the possibility of it being the alternator, since that usually goes out in cars after the starter does, but I have been told it is more than likely not it. I have power to my car, though a couple of times I tried to start her, I would either lose almost all power to the cabin or the power would flicker. If someone could help me on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

2015 X3 Is it worth $45000.00 Ccurrent 3 series owner

I"m thinking about an X3 to purchase. I would probably put 20000.00 down. I like my BMW. I like the X3. However,it is hard to justify spending 45000.00 on a compact SUV.I can purchase a Subaru XT for 33000.00. I even drove a 2016 Kia Sorrento which seemed very solid. My current vehicle is a 2004 325ci. I need awd. I drive about 12000 milws a year.

Coolant Leak - 2006 - E86 3.0si

Hello All

Hope your weekend was better than mine..lol.

I'll try and keep this as short as possible. I noticed my A/C was not as strong; at least when i was at a stop light. As I drove it started to get a little cooler. Did not hear my rad fan come one either.

I had parked my E86 and left the car idling for 7 mins with the A/C on (it was a hot day). As I was getting back in my car. I noticed steam coming from my hood.

I shut off the car immediately and opened my hood (I noticed the temp was on the high side as well & was in the middle when i left my car 7 mins prior). I noticed a lot of my coolant leaked out on the ground when i opened my hood. Something must have broken

As i removed the under car tray i noticed there was crack approx 6inches on the coolant reservoir overflow tank ( I confirmed the leak was from here as i poured water in the reservoir and noticed it was leaking from there. )

Question: Do I only need to replace this reservoir and coolant? anything else recommended to do as precautions (engine was on the hot side)? Oil change?

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks!

Changing vin in IKE on E39 with pasoft 1.4

I need some guidance with changing the Vin in a used cluster that I'm installing in my E39. Using PASoft 1.4, the cluster coding is done other than the vin. This cluster is different than others that I have been successful in regard to changing the vin. It is giving an error saying "For this algorithm use function "Factory defaults" then write FGSTNR.

I have searched and searched, but have not been able to find out when this means.

The point of this is to turn the Tamper Dot off.

Any tips or ideas?

120D M-Sport — Cold start rough and puff of smoke

Hi, I am looking some advice. I have just bought an 07 120D M-Sport however I am noticing a slight problem with it on cold start up.

It coughs on start up and runs a little rough for about 3-5seconds letting a puff of blue/black smoke out of the exhaust.

After those 3-5seconds it clears and idles normally.

It never does it when started warm or even if it has sat all day. It seems just to be on first start in the morning time.

There is no problem with power or performance, no noises or rattles. Car pulls great through all gears and is very responsive.

It has had brand new turbo fitted 10,000 mile ago and new glow plugs.

Would it be faulty/dirty EGR valve or dirty injectors?

Pocono roll on & Tri oval with Exotics Rally

A client has a Ferrari 355 F1, 375hp 3.5 liter V8 with 5 valve head, paddle shifts and it has benn upgraded with free flow exhaust and tune. My s54 is running exhaust, turner under drive pulleys and Dinan stage 2 software. Both cars ran 50% 100 octane unleaded race fuel over 93 premium. Two runs from around 35 mph start for just under half mile. Coupe pulled away off start and ferrari was beside me at half track but Coupe won by three lengths at finish both times. Coupe 2 Ferrai 0 😪

Hp wars are insane right now. Many cars were street driven to event and were over 1k hp. On tri oval 1000+hp GTR's were breaking 200mph. New Lamborghini Aventadors, Zr1, maclarans. Fast company for a little coupe. On tri oval track portion Direzza 2 tires did ok. With -2.5 camber they were not scrubbing sidewall. Ran 32 cold which may still be a bit high. Tires were predictable but not a Hoosier nor even close.

Misc - Ran against a modified S 5 in roll on. Stock 4.2 V8 should not be quick enough, but these forced induction cars can be chipped to any hp. Ran dead even with me from start to finish. A Dinan supercharged 7 series was so far behind me I thought he broke so I shut down at 3/4 track and he rolled by me through lights while I was on my bakes. 😉 a little golf r32 with a big turbo and 3.3 stroker motor beat me twice but that is a 400+ hp motor.

a good day. Small groups. Worked as an instructor for novice groups and the sun shone all day. . Stayed at MT Airy resort casino. Should be called Mt Dreary. Avoid. Expensive and looks like a holiday inn express for much more money.client wanted to go there.

Will download video today.

Local BMW dealer wants $220 for a new master key

I only have one master key and that is the only key I have for my 2000 740iL. And, the master key that I have is not working smoothly even with new battery. So, I wanted to order a new master key because I need a spare key anyway.

Went to local BMW dealer and they are asking $220. Is this sound reasonable? With tax, it will cost about $240.

Is pricing different from dealer to dealer?

Need a right trailing arm

Long story short: My pitman arm bolt snapped (no I didn't do it, but found it that way during an inspection) in the boss on the trailing arm. Tried an easy out and it ain't easy and there are no exposed threads. So rather than messing with pulling it out and taking it to a machine shop to be milled out, I'll put in a salvage item. Its for a 1984 US spec (automatic) 633CSI, P/N 33321124217. Ship to will be NYC 10028. So let me know if you've got something. Take pics and give me some idea about shipping unless you are in the tri-state area and I can do a "drive-buy"

Power Steering Upgrade (lots-o-pictures)

After a long period of E36 ownership, it has become clear that the power steering leakage isn't going to fix itself. Which is a shame, because I was really hoping it would. So failing that particular miracle, a project was set in motion to permanently tame every single drop of ATF. This is that story...

This is the culprit. A 1996 328is, just shy of 200,000 miles. It is daily driven in the mountains, it is tracked, but well treated. The engine is completely stock and original, so is the steering system, which is the problem.

The first order of business was a new steering rack. We'd heard great things about the non-M Z3 rack, so one of those was obtained. It is a rebuilt one from BMW. After that the car was very taken apart.

Once the rack was taken out, we compared it with some others, you can read more in this thread. Suffice to say, the new rack was better, and cleaner.

We also had a look at the bottom end and replaced the oil pan gasket while it was accessible. Everything looked pretty good. There were no cracks in the oil pickup tube and the oil pump nut was replaced, torqued, and safety wired. I think the risk on the M52 is much lower than the S52, but why not... it's right there and easy to do.

A custom system had been planned however, we needed to take the car apart to really get proper scope on what was required. The state of the original power steering system was pretty abysmal. As expected everything had to go. The pump, reservoir, rack, all the lines. Everything.

Orders were placed for the rest of the plumbing and the custom parts were started as well. The first custom part was the reservoir.

Arriving by parcel was a fluid cooler and a filter. Also a bunch of other plumbing items which are in the parts list at the bottom.

Measuring the inner diameter of the OEM hosing it was decided that 8AN matched reasonably well for all the low pressure runs. After cutting open a high pressure hose we decided to use an OEM one. It has a banjo fitting on both ends so it should be reliable, and the pressure it carries is high enough that most home-made custom hoses can't deal with it (up to 1,750 PSI).

The M3 PS pump is better for these custom builds because it has a threaded hole for the feed rather than a barbed end. For that reason and others one of those was ordered. The offset is wrong for the 328is so the belt doesn't line up, but the bracket can be milled down and then it fits appropriately. This 328is oil pan also has the bolt hole for the pump just like the M3 does.

Fitting the cooler and filter was a challenge. This car is slowly becoming a track car, it hasn't had air conditioning for awhile. The condenser, pump, lines, and front fan are all gone. This opens up a lot of space in the front to build a custom crossmember and duct system. A perfect place to mount some stuff.

The first hose we made was the feed between the reservoir and the pump. This presents an interesting challenge because it needs some flexibility. The engine moves around some as you drive along, so there needs to be slack in that line. It would also be nice to be able to pick the engine up to swap engine mounts or similar, so some slack would be nice for that too. The pump is not gravity fed so strictly speaking the feed doesn't have to be down or straight or anything. We elected to do a feed loop. It seems to make priming kind of a pain, but otherwise works fine. We unbolted the reservoir bracket from the arm and held the reservoir higher when we primed it to make things easier.

The rack was put in the car too and it got some nice fittings and some nice mounting hardware. In many places we replaced stock fasteners with ARP. The 12-point head bolts are especially cool because they allow much more reliable torque to be applied without slipping. Approximating an E-Torx but you can use a standard 12-point socket on them.

The system was fully plumbed and everything mounted up. Another piece had to be made to mount the filter. See the second annotated photo for fluid flow direction. A piece was also made to route the hoses safely through the front ducting.

Here is additional detail of the plumbing done for the rack, the front-back runs, and the high pressure/reservoir. Note the annotated versions to indicate hoses and fluid direction.

Here is how the reservoir ended up from the bottom view. The rack and new tie rods/control arms. The car got entirely new front end suspension at the same time, can see the rear of the knuckle and all the new fasteners including the new ARP 12-point heads.

The system was filled with Redline D6 ATF, because it is red, and red makes the car faster. Then we primed it, put it on the ground, and it started making bad noises! Oh noes! What horrible mistakes did we make... turns out, the pump was faulty. The service bung on the side was not sealed properly and was sucking in air and leaking fluid. It did not leak fluid until the car was on the ground with a load applied. We consider this a clear failure of the part. The pump is punched next to the hole so the aluminum thread deforms and you cannot remove the bung. Clearly this is not a user-servicable point and of course we did not mess with it. We purchased a new pump with intent to return this one.

We drained the system, swapped the pump, got new crush washers, primed it, started it up... no noises, no problems. Took it for a test drive, still great. Not a drop of ATF anywhere outside the system.

The Z3 rack is not much faster. If you do the math it is something between 5 and 10% faster than stock 328is. In practice, that's about what it feels like too. A bit, but not a lot faster.

Further Notes:
  • Some other interesting PS builds can be found here.
  • Using braided steel hoses is strictly not necessary for power steering. Braided steel does not increase the pressure holding of the hose. It is a sheathing that exists to prevent abrasion and puncture. It also acts as a file when vibrating and can destroy metal. Use only when needed (in-cabin fluid runs or brake lines).
  • The system is noisier in general. Could be a number of reasons for this.

Things that we might do differently next time:
  • This cooler is way excessive. A smaller cooler or a custom cooler would be better.
  • The filter is too big and the screen is probably not fine enough.
  • Not sure if the vertical pump feed loop is wise or the best solution.
