I have read lots of informations about the noise. I am already going crazy about my vehicle. I am working now on 2005 Range Rover HSE 4.4 (I know its a bimmer forum but it has everything mechanical from BMW M62 engine and transmission ZF5HP24 the same).
Complaint:
Vehicle has lots of issues, big transmission leak and ticking noise from the engine.
What I have done:
-ticking noise can be heard inside of the vehicle, it is regular and goes up with the engine speed (the same noise on hot or cold engine)
-engine is Idling weird, while no throttle it looks all right but when I try to keep it for a while on a bit higher rpms or like 3000 rpms it will change engine speed without moving the gas pedal
-checked engine oil, is at the maximum level and clean I can not see any metallic debris that would prove faulty rod. Is it possible that rod is faulty and I wont be able to see anything in the engine oil?
-engine works good, has power and does not smoke
-it is very hard to diagnose noise source, I would say it comes from the place where transmission and engine splits when you are under the car and from the LH valve cover when you are under the hood. I used a stethoscope to diagnose but can not find direct source
-transmission leak from the input shaft, I do have already removed the transmission and will disassemble tomorrow, my question is "can it be torque converter making the noise?" I can not say if it is wrong or not. The sympthoms of transmission failture are correct with the torque converter, but also low oil level could cause the sympthoms. Is there any way I can check the TC? Do you know any shops that sell or rebuilt them for good money? Can be this type of ticking caused by TC?
-I do have removed LH valve cover, everything looks good, no extended wear on camshafts. Also tried to bleed out the valve hydraulics but with no success.
Please answer if you have any ideas for my problem. Can not make a move of the noise because just have removed tranny.
