Under seat sensor wiring

Hello everyone,

I have a 1999 323i convertible that was really neglected by previous owners. It has 152K and seems to run fine. I have completely rebuilt the front end and have done the shocks, shock mounts and stabilizer bar links in the rear...RTAB's seem tight and fine. I have no maintenance history for the car and it is evident it was never really taken care of as far as the interior goes.

The front seats were in really poor condition and looked like they were never cleaned or conditioned. My interior color is the dove grey and after almost a year of searching I found an interior (front and back seats) in dove grey that was in really good condition that I could afford. The only difference I could see was that they came out of a right hand drive car and the passenger seat (driver's seat in USA) had the seat back release button on both sides instead of the driver's seat (passenger seat in USA). I really didn't care about that. Oh, the other difference was the replacement seats are sport seats (not from and M3) and mine are just regular.

I just put the interior in yesterday and found out that the sensors under the seat bottoms are not the same as the ones that were on my seats. It appears that the wiring and sensors are reversed between the euro and USA models. Not only that, but I think the euro seats are from an earlier model than mine.

I tried switching over the ones from my car but there is no place to mount on one of the seats.

Can anyone tell me exactly what the sensors are for on the USA models? I'm guessing something to do with the airbags?? My car has both driver and passenger airbags and the side airbags, as well.

I believe my airbag warning light is burned out because when I turn the key on before starting the car, I don't see any illuminated in it's self test mode. I drove the car yesterday and there is no airbag warning light on.

It appears as though the car harness plugs in my car are different than the receivers in the replacement seats. One of the male end plugs (and the only one that would fit in the switch on the replacement seat) with 3 wires going to it broke on the passenger side. Too much tension when seat was moved all the way back and the wires pulled out.

If this sensor is to detect a passenger and enable the airbag to work, is it possible to "jump" these wires to bypass the sensor switch so the airbag is enabled all the time?

What dangers are there driving without these sensors working?

I'm hoping one of you guys, or several of you, have extensive knowledge with the wiring in these E36's.

Many thanks in advance...
