Gremlins!

I'm having an electrical problem, please let me know if I'm on the right track.

The dashboard "battery" light comes on when the car starts, gets brighter with RPMs. Sometimes the radio loses power momentarily. Sometimes the engine stutters- it blinks out with the lights, tach/speedo, etc, but comes right back. Other times it just dies and won't start again until I disconnect the battery for a couple minutes.

The volt meter shows 12.4 at the battery and 13.9 at idle. Does not change with revs. I replaced the voltage regulator the other day- and it made a huge difference! Idle is stronger, windows go up and down faster, and I thought it was cured. But then it died after a (much more longer than before) drive. Is the alternator itself the next step? Can it be bad if it's putting out decent voltage- should I pull it for testing? Is it likely to be a bad ground or something else?

Thanks, electricity is confusing!
