New to e39s- looking to upgrade lighting

Hi all. I'm the new proud owner of my late-grandfather's 1998 e39. When he was around he didn't take too much care of it. Since he got me turned onto BMWs I can think of nothing better than to make this car look factory fresh.

Its a '98 so it has pre-face lifted head and tail lights. I'd like it upgrade the look of it but have some questions first:

Tails: Are face lifted tail lights simply plug and play? When I upgraded the tails on my e92 to the newer LED versions, I had to get them coded. I suspect something similar would be the case here but want to make sure before I spend any money.

Headlights: Ulimately, I'd love to retrofit the facelifted Xenons but if that's going to be too much work, I'd settle for just getting the angel eye look.
1. What would it take to retrofit oem Xenons?
2. Did the e39 ever have a non-xenon facelifted light? If so, what would it take to get those in?
3. If oem lights turn out to be to too expensive, what's the best aftermarket option?

*Its worth noting that regarding the angel eyes, all I'm looking for would be the oem Amber rings, not LEDs.*
