My 325ix is going the way of the lemon.

I am pretty frustrated with this car. It is the 6th BMW i have owned, all e28 and e30. But this one is not making a whole lot of sense to me.

To start off, i bought it from a guy for 1500 bucks, re manufactured head, circa 200k miles.. He said it had a rough idle sometimes, but test driving it that never happened, and never cropped up for about 6 months. I figured it was cheap because of the horrific paint quality. So i enjoyed my car for awhile.

Then the idle started. It would die at lights a lot, die at startup. I changed the spark plugs and this solved it for awhile. 2 or 3 weeks later and its back.

I re-adjusted the TPS, and checked it with a multimeter. It seems to run better for awhile, then goes back to bad idle.

I replaced the ICV. It seems to run better, then a few weeks later the idle is back.

Replaced 02 sensor. better, then crap again. I think you get the idea. I feel like most of the things i have done have seemed to fix it for awhile, but then it went back.

Some more relevant data:

The only code that ever showed was Lambda 2 i think.... it was lambda 1 or 2. Hence replacing the 02.

The car now will not pull any codes, despite the check engine light blinking in spastic patterns constantly, depending on whether or not i am accellerating etc. No, not the check light i promise, the check engine light.

The PO had changed the AMS to a MAF. When i attempted to change it back, it would not start.

The PO had an aftermarket chip installed, and included two others and the original. All of which help the car to continue being terrible, no appreciable improvement on any. (back on OG one at the moment).

Currently things have degraded pretty far though. The car dies on the interstate on my way to work. When i say die i mean it goes to zero RPMs and then catches up again with a neck-breaking lurch. Sometimes a backfire. It takes issue with having to start, now pretty much every time i try. And today it has begun a new habit of sticking the throttle at 4k, so i have to yank it out of gear and shut it off.

My biggest bet at the moment is that the ECU is dying. It doesn't miss a cylinder, it will miss a few at a time when it does. i was thinking maybe coil, but i was under the impression that coils just die, they dont just act pathetic for awhile first.

What i really don't get is how it idles at like 4k. I mean, i can see that the butterfly is closed... with ICV full open is that enough to do that?

Anyway, i really like the car. I am sick of buying random parts, i need some advice. ECU is expensive so i don't want to jump to that conclusion just yet.
