On my 98 540, the windshield trim is breaking off everywhere, it looks bad and I think it is making a howling noise under certain wind conditions caused by the air whistling across the crack. I was going to just replace the trim, but I've heard from various folks that it's very difficult to replace the trim without replacing the windshield.
So, What about removing all of the remaining trim, and then replacing the trim with black RTV/windshield sealant? Are there some reasons that it's a bad idea? I assume that it will require some additional cleanup if I ever have to replace the windshield, but hopefully I won't have to do that.
My plan was to mask off the paint and mask off the windshield where the current trim ends, then lay the RTV, smooth it and when it's tacky, remove the masking tape to give me a nice edge.
Am I crazy?
thanks
